Abstract The macabre of violence orchestrated by high degree of ethnic colouration and religious intolerance gave credence to this research topic. Overtime the Nigeria nation has been besieged by different altercations that have consequently retarded the pace of progress and development of the country. The study which adopted the frustration aggression theory and using the secondary data as a source submits that economic dissatisfaction arising from politics of exclusion, religious bias, leadership problem, insurgency among others have conspicuously created division among people who have agreed under one federating unit to live as one have rather consistently been denied their fair share of the "national cake". Consequently, this has led to bottled up anger, frustration and some level of disenchantment. It is against this backdrop that this paper seeks to interrogate-the nature and dimension of the Nigerian security situation and its slow pace development. The study concluded that the agitations for fair treatment, equal representation, effective governance are basic and necessary ingredients of restructuring that could help guarantee a peaceful co-existence devoid of rancour and acrimony. The study therefore among other things recommended that true federalism, good governance, justice would guarantee security and development in Nigeria.

Abstract Modern terrorism studies have understudied non-terrorist conflicts in relation to credible commitment to peace building in the developing countries. Contemporary theories of peace building bring this to scholarly glare. From this perspective, the contradictions of mediation and negotiation, without credible commitment among key stakeholder groups, leads to complex and multidimensional resurgence of post recovery conflict. This study draws from the Niger Delta experience. It conceptualizes militancy as a non- terrorist violence to differentiate it from terrorism and further builds on credibility and reputation theory and posits that non commitment to peace process may not only trigger new conflict rather mars the reputation of parties to the conflict. In this context, the paper demonstrates that State lethargy has been a major trigger of post amnesty violence in the Niger Delta. Based on in-depth interviews with ex-combatants, presidential amnesty programme(PAP) representatives, and civil society organizations(CSOs) working on peace building, it argues that credible commitment is a marginalized concept that has a high mediation and reconciliation impact. To make an original contribution in this complexity, dimensions of non - credible commitment was discussed to identify key social processes or drivers, which helped explain how and why credible commitment is essential for post amnesty sustainable peace. These drivers also increased understanding of the wider diversity of resurgent post amnesty violence and implications for peace building. The study provides guidance for developing a commitment to peace, which offers some policy insights to non- terrorist conflict and in particular, post amnesty armed violence in the Niger Delta

Abstract Abstract: This article analyses democracy and the challenge of credible election. It explores how the failure of Nigeria’s independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)to collate and transmit votes in real time via the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) despite the many promises of credibility of electronic voting during the 2023 presidential election negatively affected the electoral process leading to the challenge of the electoral outcome in the court of law. Building on institutional theory, the study argues that, it is not enough to put in place electronic voting rather demonstrates that institutional inefficiency such as delay in uploading and transmitting electoral results into the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS)and poor operational capacity of INEC in timely collation of results contradicts transparency a hallmark of democracy. The article examines how the challenge posed by non-timely transmission of election results, undermined the electoral outcome and pose a challenge to credible polls. It concludes that the combination of several factors and particularly elite corruption, led to the failure of INEC to conduct credible polls. In the alternative, the study made some policy recommendations for credible polls.

Abstract This paper intends to x-ray burning issues in electoral process which often culminate in crisis and turbulence. We are seeking answers to the following questions in electoral abnormality and irregularity, where lies the fault? is the fault with electoral organization or deficiency in the Electoral Act? What are the implications on the corporate existence in the society? These questions provide a broad cover for other issues pertaining to the nature and processes of elections. These broad questions are also central to the concern of electorate against the backdrop of "One man, one vote". One of the questions could have contributed majorly to the violence that trailed all our elections during and, lately, post-elections of 2011 general elections. We, therefore, attempt a review of some activities in Nigeria general elections in the past and proffer a recipe for future elections in this country.

Abstract This paper examine how insecurity becomes a problem for the peaceful coexistence in Nigeria and how other socio-economic and political problems, form a challenge for national development. Among other challenges of national development, Nigeria is suffering from colossal corruption, selfish leadership, poor economic policy and dependency on foreign aids. As a multi-ethnic country, there are mutual hostilities among different ethnic groups that make up the country. Nigeria shall utilize this as an impetus for development, but the reverse is the case because of incessant conflicts between the device communities. These factors have continued and culminated in widespread unemployment, poverty, inter-tribal and intra-trial conflicts, formation of youthful violent groups and insurgencies. No matter who initiated the problem what matters is how much effort a country exerts to find solution to its developmental challenges. The paper suggests that, the solution to these problems is to establish justice, equity and equality, fight corruption and make jobs available for the youthful population in order to achieve peace and national development.

Abstract Nigeria in the last ten years has become a country known for all kinds of violence, ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, Niger Delta militancy, invasion by Fulani herdsmen and "Boko Haram" insurgency. The emergence of these groups in different parts of the country have not only over stretched the efforts of our security network and apparatus but also have very negative implications and effects on the nation's economy. The study which hinges its sources on primary and secondary data examines the challenges of terrorism exemplified by the activities of the terrorist insurgency and the prospect for the survival of our national development. The work is predicated on frustration aggression theory, and identified some basic fundamental differences among politicians, ethnic groups and religious divides, reckless and wanton display of wealth as some of the factors responsible for Nigeria's insurgency. The study revealed that the inability of state actors to curb the menace of unending internal violence which consequently weakened the state efforts at sustaining national development. On the strength of the conclusion the research equally recommends that while there is the need to effectively equip the military and other armed forces involved in counter terrorism, there must be some level of co-operation among all stakeholders to promote and sustain national unity In order to achieve national development.

Abstract The paper examined quality education for sustainable national development in Nigeria. Over the years, there have been the quest to pursue national development and one of such means is through quality education. The paper therefore argued that national development is possible if only quality education is prompted as a means for sustainable development. The paper which adopted the analytical approach posits that quality education is a sine-qua non to achieving national development through effective government policies anchored on effective curriculum. The study further posited that the quality of education will be adequately sustained when the content of the curriculum is explored and therefore becomes a prerequisite for attaining national development. This focuses on the components of sustainable national development, quality education and equally shows the nexus between the quality of life of the people in Nigeria. Often time, there have been some dismal performance by our policy makers which rob off some of the qualities of education and make national development a mirage. The paper concluded that national development is possible when all the paraphernalia of teaching are put in place. The paper therefore came up with the following suggestions; that the existing curriculum should reflect the outcome of the learner's ability. Again, teachers should be adequately motivated to give the teaching profession adequate attention. Government intervention role must be in tune with modern standard of learning, among others.

Abstract When in 1999, democratic governance kicked off in Nigeria, the people of Nigeria gave a hive of relief and respite. This is because to many democrats and well meaning Nigerians, democratic governance would bring about not only national development but some semblance of cohesion vis-à-vis national integration that would put a permanent end to military incursion and other existing social vices. But in recent time, these laudable objectives borne out of democratic leadership have suffered some serious setbacks because of terrorism. No country can make any meaningful development in a country enmeshed in persistent war or terrorist acts. Abstract The Nigerian state has remained relatively unstable since her independence in 1960. With a multitude of weak socio-political institutions and poor civic attitudes to match, bulk of what has transpired within the Nigerian political process till today are abuses of all forms. With steadily rising tension in party politics orchestrated mostly by poor attitude of Party politicians, the fundamental democratic principle of rule of law within the context of the Nigerian state is in flight. Worse is that the electoral umpire has in each republic continued to compromise their roles by conniving with the "cabal" in power to frustrate credible elections and general democratic norms. This has led to Nigeria's low rating among the committee of democratizing states. The central plank of this paper is to critically assess the issues in question within the nexus of Nigerian politics.

Abstract Education in tertiary institutions is geared towards actualizing the dreams and aspirations of students whose minds are made up to achieve a particular goal at the point of departure from the secondary school. At this point, the burning desire to become a doctor an engineer, a pharmacist among others depends on set goal as soon as the admission was provided. But, in most contemporary higher institutions of learning, the self-driven dreams have been cut short because of many antisocial vices, ranging from cultism, kidnapping, drug abuse, examination malpractice and stealing to mention a few. The thrust of this paper therefore is to critically examine moral decadence in higher institutions which has destroyed institutions and bring about the ridiculousness of education in Society. This paper which is set out to adopt the group theory as a basis of analysis will adopt the use of secondary and primary sources of data to examine this academic discourse. Empirical evidences have shown that no nation can make meaningful progress in the absence of quality education which is the responsibility of higher education. The paper went further to make recommendations believing that if they are strictly and effectively adopted and implemented by the authority concern, it will reposition these citadels of learning and make the students to reason sharply, responsibly and thus become good ambassadors of their respective schools and national development a sustainable one.

Abstract The emergence of modern nations that predicated their political and socio-economic governance on liberal democratic tripod of rule of law, individual liberty and holistic development as the most powerful and progressive has seen intense efforts among nations of the world towards approximating national norms, rules and institutions to liberal democracy. The understanding is that democracy will safeguard human liberty, ensure that rule of law is entrenched and guarantee national security and development. After series of punctuated attempts, Nigeria joined the comity of democratic nations with great optimism in May, 1999. Regrettably, after over fourteen years of uninterrupted practice, democracy both as a process of governance and a way of life is yet to place Nigeria on the path to social stability and national security. This paper takes a cursory look at the Nigerian state and observes that both pre-amalgamation and post- amalgamation complexes have effectively combined to weaken Nigeria's democratic stature. Arguing that such complexes and contradictions must be resolved for any meaningful headway to be made by Nigeria, the paper proffered some realistic solutions capable of repositioning Nigeria on the path to sustainable security.

Abstract Since her foundation in 1914 and subsequent independence in 1960, the Nigerian state has frontally battled developmental and other related challenges. With the assistance of development experts, Nigerian governments at various times have initiated programmes aimed at alleviating poverty, fighting corruption and improving the standard of living of her people. Sadly, these development programmes which most often stipulate time frames and are driven by targets to be accomplished continued to collapse one after the other. Being one of the most recent of these developmental blueprints, Vision 20:2020 was expected to drive Nigeria's effort towards emerging as one of the World's twenty largest economies by the year 2020.Unfortunately, less than ten years to the terminal date of this vision, there is nothing on ground to show that it could be actualized. Drawing heavily from the analytical strength of political economy, this paper critically looked at the concepts of development, vision 20:2020 and sustainable development in Nigeria. The observation is that weaknesses in institutional and legal foundations, policy inconsistency, corrupt and rascally political class among others which continues to combine to frustrate developmental blue prints may derail the Vision 20:2020 aspiration. The paper submitted some empirically derived recommendations that may provide the necessary ingredients needed by this vision to actualize its 20:2020 dreams while delivering sustainable development to Nigeria.

Abstract Globally, it is the chief function of every government to provide socio-economic environment-cum-means that its citizens would engage in, in order to live good standard of life. However, the political leaders particularly in the third world countries, Nigeria inclusive, designed socio- economic and political structures that promote and protect them and the affluents in the society; a situation which landed the masses in poverty. The issues of integrity, fairness, honesty, accountability, exemplary character among others, are thrown to the winds by these leaders. The leadership style is characterised with acquisition of wealth at the expense of the common man in poverty. Consequently, through secondary source of data, the paper surveys the possibilities of sports as a nations tool for poverty alleviation, character building, leadership and national development in Nigeria. Through this investigation, the paper established the possibility of using sports as tool to achieve the aforesaid areas of development, and equally made recommendations.
